What calorie needs actually measure
Your body burns energy all day, even when you are sitting still. It needs fuel for breathing, circulation, temperature control, brain activity, digestion, and ordinary movement. The base cost of being alive is called basal metabolic rate or BMR. Once you add walking, training, chores, work, and the energy cost of digesting food, you get total daily energy expenditure or TDEE. That is the figure a weight plan is usually built around.
The math behind the calculator is intentionally simple because it has to work for millions of different people. The most common approach is to estimate BMR from height, weight, age, and sex, then adjust for activity. That produces a workable estimate, not a direct measurement of metabolism. Why activity changes the number so much
The activity factor is usually the biggest swing in the result. A sedentary desk worker and a person who walks all day can have the same BMR but very different TDEE values. That is why this calculator asks you to be honest about a normal week, not an ideal one. Choosing "very active" because you had one hard workout is how people end up confused by a calorie target that is too high.
As a rough guide, the factors mean this: 1.2 is very little exercise; 1.375 is light activity; 1.55 is moderate activity; 1.725 is hard training most days; and 1.9 is physical work or very high training volume. Those labels are broad on purpose. Real life does not fit neatly into boxes.
How to use the number for maintenance, loss, or gain
Maintenance is the simplest use. If you eat near your TDEE for a few weeks, your weight should stay roughly stable. For weight loss, a moderate deficit of 250 to 500 calories per day is a common starting point. For weight gain, a surplus of about 250 calories per day is usually more sustainable than a big leap. The point is not to force your body into a strict schedule; it is to choose a direction you can actually live with.
If the scale does not move the way the calculator predicts, adjust slowly. Water shifts, weekend eating, inaccurate tracking, and changes in activity can all blur the picture. The number is a calibration point. Your real-world trend over two to four weeks is the thing that matters.
Why no calorie estimate is exact
Predictive equations are built on population averages. They do not measure your metabolism directly. Two people with the same height and weight can still burn different amounts of energy because of muscle mass, medications, hormones, illness, stress, and everyday movement. The formula does not see any of that.
That is why a calorie estimate should never be treated as a verdict. If you are consistently hungry, fatigued, or unable to maintain a target, the plan may need to move. If you have a medical condition, a history of disordered eating, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to a clinician or registered dietitian before using calorie targets as a guide.

That can be useful, but only when it is paired with patience and feedback from your actual body. A plan that looks perfect on paper but falls apart in real life is not a good plan.
